Stupid fucking hips!

I’ve had to take a deload this week because my hip flexors are quite unhappy with me. I don’t know if this is because of the volume of training Matt’s got me doing, the changes I’ve made to my squat position are taking a while to adjust to, or if my hip flexors are just shit!

So the plan for this week – lift 3 times but only at 50%, foam roll, stretch, get a massage, eat, sleep and hope that by the time my peak cycle starts next Monday I’m in some sort of shape to lift!

I won’t bother with a day-by-day run down. This blog is boring enough anyway without endless ‘today was a rest day’ action!!

Monday 5 August

Light squats today, but 40kg, which is less than 50%, felt fucking horrible. Yep, I definitely need to rest!! I usually squat 3 times a week, but this will be the only time this week, otherwise I’ll never get better!!

  • Squats:
    • 20kg x 10 (x 2 sets)
    • 40kg x 5 (x 5 sets)
  • Bodyweight squats with bands around my knees:
    • red band x 10 (x 4 sets)
  • Bodyweight side lunges:
    • 8 (x 4 sets)
  • Foam rolling:
    • 15 mins
  • Stretching:
    • 15 mins

Tuesday 6 August

Thankfully, my hip flexors didn’t feel any worse when I woke up this morning, although they definitely don’t feel any better!

I had to be careful with the set up of bench press to make sure I didn’t tense my hips too much. It wasn’t particularly comfortable though! Gah!!

  • Bench press:
    • 25kg x 8 (x 4 sets)
  • Dumbbell incline bench press:
    • 20lb x 8 (x 4 sets)
  • Band pulldowns:
    • red band x 12 (x 4 sets)
  • Face pulls:
    • 25kg x 10 (x 4 sets)
  • Foam rolling:
    • 10 mins
  • Stretching:
    • 10 mins

Thursday 8 August

My hips are feeling better, but not 100%. Light deadlifts today though, and I didn’t notice anything worrying while doing them so woohoo!!

  • Deadlifts:
    • 50kg x 10
    • 60kg x 5 (x 5 sets)
  • Seated row:
    • 80lb x 8 (x 4 sets)
  • Pull downs:
    • #6 x 8 (x 4 sets)
  • Clams:
    • 10 (x 4 sets on both sides)

This session took less than an hour. I quite like short workouts! About 40 minutes later, I was tucking into this at Tara’s! I haven’t had mashed potato in such a long time and it was amazing.

Friday 9 and Saturday 10 August

These two days were filled with graphic novel and comic book geekery!

On Friday, I went to the British Library to listen to a “conversation” with Bryan Lee O’Malley, the writer of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels. He was promoting his new book, Seconds, so there was also a book signing. I managed to get myself quite close to the front of the queue. He was ever such a nice guy!

Bryan Lee O’Malley being lovely, and his very scrawly, but efficient, autograph!

On Saturday, I dragged The Boyfriend up to the British Library (twice in two days, what?!) to have a look at the Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the UK exhibition. It was absolutely rammed and I didn’t get to look at everything as closely as I would’ve liked 😦

Saturday was also a day of indulgences: burgers…

Rest day burger, erm, gainz!

…and stationery!

I start my peak cycle for the British Classic on Monday, so my body had better behave itself. I’ve got a lot of work to do if I want to add 20kg to my total!!
